Colonoscopy preparation.

چکیده
The American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE) Technology Committee provides reviews of existing, new, or emerging endoscopic technologies that have an impact on the practice of GI endoscopy. Evidence-based methods are used with a MEDLINE literature search to identify pertinent clinical studies on the topic and a MAUDE (Food and Drug Administration Center for Devices and Radiological Health) database search to identify the reported complications of a given technology. Both searches were supplemented by accessing the ‘‘related articles’’ feature of PubMed and by scrutinizing pertinent references cited by the identified studies. Controlled clinical trials are emphasized, but, in many cases, data from randomized controlled trials are lacking. In such cases, large case series, preliminary clinical studies, and expert opinions are used. Technical data are gathered from traditional and Web-based publications, proprietary publications, and informal communications with pertinent vendors. Technology Status Evaluation Reports are drafted by 1 or 2 members of the ASGE Technology Committee, reviewed and edited by the committee as a whole, and approved by the governing board of the ASGE. When financial guidance is indicated, the most recent coding data and list prices at the time of publication are provided. For this review, the MEDLINE database was searched through September 2008 for articles and references related to colonoscopy preparation by using the key words ‘‘preparation,’’ ’’randomized clinical trial,’’ ‘‘colonic cleansing,’’ ‘‘lavage,’’ ‘‘pediatric,’’ and ‘‘colonoscopy.’’ Practitioners should continue to monitor the medical literature for subsequent data about the efficacy, safety, and socioeconomic aspects of these preparations. Technology Status Evaluation Reports are scientific reviews provided solely for educational and informational purposes. Technology Status Evaluation Reports are not rules and should not be construed as establishing a legal standard of care or as encouraging, advocating, requiring, or discouraging any particular treatment or payment for such treatment.

Introduction: Colonoscopy is a method of endoscopy of lower gastrointestinal system which needs ‎proper colon preparation that allows proper assessment, diagnosis and treatment. There are different ‎methods of bowel preparation available. Therefore more research by critical nurses can result in ‎better care.‎ Objective: The aim of present study is to compare the routine metho...
متن کاملComparison of the analgesic effect of intravenous paracetamol/midazolam and fentanyl in preparation
Background: Although some patients can tolerate colonoscopy procedure using fentanyl/ midazolam without any sedation and analgesic requirements but some patients may require additional sedation with benzodiazepines. We performed the present study to compare the effect of paracetamol/midazolam with fentanyl/ midazolam. Methods: In a clinical trial, 96 patients aged 18 to 75 years old, ...

متن کاملRisk factors predictive of poor quality preparation during average risk colonoscopy screening: the importance of health literacy.
BACKGROUND Inadequate colonoscopy bowel preparation can lead to increased procedural time, decreased diagnostic yield, and an increased complication rate. Little is known about which patient characteristics may predict poor bowel preparation for routine, average-risk colonoscopy evaluation. METHODS 300 consecutive patients who underwent routine, average risk outpatient screening colonoscopy d...
متن کاملOptimizing bowel preparation for colonoscopy: a guide to enhance quality of visualization
Colonoscopy is an important screening and therapeutic modality for colorectal cancer. Unlike other screening tests, colonoscopy is dependent on pre-procedure bowel preparation. If the bowel preparation is poor, significant pathology may be missed. Many factors are known to improve bowel preparation. This review will highlight those factors that may optimize the bowel preparation, including choi...
متن کاملCost Effectiveness of Screening Colonoscopy Depends on Adequate Bowel Preparation Rates – A Modeling Study
BACKGROUND Inadequate bowel preparation during screening colonoscopy necessitates repeating colonoscopy. Studies suggest inadequate bowel preparation rates of 20-60%. This increases the cost of colonoscopy for our society. AIM The aim of this study is to determine the impact of inadequate bowel preparation rate on the cost effectiveness of colonoscopy compared to other screening strategies fo...
